Update from the Arkansas Safe Routes to School Program

In the most recent application call, Arkansas received 36 applications requesting approximately $7 million dollars in projects. Because of the limited funds only 20 applications were selected with a budget of $1.5 million. As usual, the request for funding far outweighs what is available to applicants.

Non-infrastructure project selections included six educations programs varying from bicycle training and train the trainers programs, bike/ped safety awareness and an encouragement program that will utilize the Boltage system and track student’s progress and reward them for miles traveled via active transportation (foot or bicycle). Twelve infrastructure projects were selected including two planning grants. Sidewalks were the most popular request, and other projects awarded included traffic calming devices such as flashing beacons.

Most agreements of understanding have been signed. The next phase of development is issuing notices to proceed and developing design plans.  In the meantime, Arkansas is busy generating excitement around the first annual Bike to School Day.
