Low-income communities and communities of color face additional challenges when it comes to getting enough physical activity compared to more affluent communities. These communities are less likely to have sidewalks, bike paths, and street lighting that make it safe and convenient to walk or bike. There are fewer parks, and additional risks such as violence and crime that prevent people from being active outside.

These are some of the reasons that rates of physical inactivity and obesity are disproportionately high among Latino and African American youth. Health inequities in low-income communities stem from a lack of access to physical activity opportunities such as parks, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes.

The Safe Routes Partnership invites partners and advocates to join a conversation on Twitter during National Physical Fitness and Sports Month to discuss the opportunities and challenges to advancing walking and bicycling and work to increase health, fairness, and opportunity for low-income communities and communities of color.
