The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will be convening a September board meeting to discuss Assembly Bill 617, the Community Air Protection Program. AB 617 will mandate new community-driven action strategies to reduce air pollution and improve public health for communities who experience disproportionate burden of poor air quality. It’s a new way of engaging community members and organizations in helping craft air pollution solutions.
On September 27, CARB will meet to vote on the program requirements and to approve the first 10 communities for the pilot year. The 10 communities were selected based on a three step public process which occurred over the course of 10 months that included identification and assessment of cumulative air pollution exposure burdens. Each of the 10 sites have significant needs; we are particularly pleased to see Muscoy on the list as Muscoy has been an important community for Safe Routes to School advocacy.
